Happy Friday, everyone!! I’m excited to be partnering with 23andMe today, along with my sister Rachel, to share more about our experience using their Health+Ancestry Service! In case you haven’t heard of them, 23andMe is an at-home service that allows you to discover more about what your DNA says about you by simply collecting your saliva in the tube provided and sending it in. 23andMe’s name comes from the fact that human DNA is organized into 23 pairs of chromosomes (which I’ll admit I didn’t know before!! haha). 23andMe reached out to us a couple months ago to see if we’d be interested in comparing our data to learn more about how our DNA may influence our health our ancestors and our traits and we thought with a new year full of new goals it might be fun to give it a try!!
All of my sisters and I have always been best friends so it was super interesting to dig deep and actually learn more about our unique DNA and how it compares to one another (we encouraged our little sisters do it too after we got our reports back, because we were so curious and intrigued by the whole experience!!!).
Mine and Rachel’s results were very similar for the most part! Over 88% of our ancestry composition came from Europe, which I wasn’t surprised about. But I honestly thought the wellness reports were more interesting than anything. I learned that my genetic muscle composition is uncommon in elite power athletes (Rachel’s genetic muscle composition was common in elite power athletes). The deep sleep report was informative, too, given since having the twins I feel like my sleep regimen and ability to sleep for longer periods of time has been impossible. My Sleep Movement report also showed that I’m likely to move more than the average person while sleeping – about 16 times per hour!!!
